About This Tour
Cambridge has more historically significant pubs per square mile than almost any city in England — and most visitors spend the evening in the tourist traps near King’s Parade without knowing what they’re missing two streets away.
This guided evening pub crawl starts in the late afternoon and moves through the city as the light drops — beginning with the hidden food lanes and the stories behind Cambridge’s drinking culture, then moving into four to five of the city’s most characterful and historically rich pubs as the evening takes hold. The guide leads the walk between pubs. What you drink at each stop is entirely your own business.
The tour grew directly from our most-read blog content on Cambridge’s pub history. If you found us through those posts, this is the experience those posts were written for.
The Route
📌 Specific pubs may vary based on private events or the evening’s conditions. The guide always selects the best available options. The route below is the standard planned itinerary.
Stop 1 — The Mill, Mill Lane
One of Cambridge’s oldest riverside pubs. The millpond view at dusk is one of the finest in the city. Quieter than the Eagle and the Anchor, more local in character, and with a story attached to almost every corner of the building.
Stop 2 — The Anchor, Silver Street
Riverside. Where Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, and the rest of early Pink Floyd drank in the 1960s. The Cambridge music scene that produced one of the world’s greatest bands started in this building and in the venues around it. The view across the River Cam from the terrace as the light fades is worth the walk alone.
Stop 3 — The Eagle, Bene’t Street
Always the start. The oldest pub in Cambridge. Where Francis Crick announced the discovery of DNA at lunchtime in 1953, and where wartime airmen burned their names into the ceiling above the RAF bar. The tour begins here in the late afternoon, while there is still enough light to see the ceiling properly.
Stop 4 — The Pint Shop, Peas Hill ★ TASTING STOP
Cambridge’s finest craft beer venue, in a beautifully restored Victorian building. This is the optional tasting stop — see the add-on section below. Even without the tasting, The Pint Shop is worth visiting for its beer list and its room.
Stop 5 — The Maypole, Portugal Place (Optional Finale)
The hidden local. Off the tourist circuit, around the corner from everything, frequented almost entirely by Cambridge residents. The reward for those who make it to the end. This is what Cambridge actually drinks like, away from the tour groups.
At this stage, we can add 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 more pubs owing to your preference.
