The Cambridge Highlights Tour

Two ways to walk it

I run this as a private tour, just your group and me. You choose the length. The Essential covers the centre and the river in 90 minutes. The Full keeps going, up Trinity Street to the bigger colleges and the Round Church, then back through the Market.

The Essential walk (90 minutes)

The centre of Cambridge in a single loop. We start at King’s, the view everyone comes for, then slip into the quieter corners most visitors miss.

We begin at King’s College, then walk to St Catharine’s and Corpus Christi. Down Silver Street to Queens’ College and the Mathematical Bridge, then out to the Backs for the river and the colleges from the water’s edge. We come back through Garret Hostel Lane, Trinity Lane and Senate House Passage, some of the oldest and most photogenic streets in the city, and finish where we started at King’s.

If we have time at the end, we stop at the Eagle, the old coaching inn just off the centre, and you can finish with food or a beer at the Pint Shop nearby.

This is the right walk for a first visit, a free morning, or a stop on the way through from London.

The Full walk (about 2.5 hours)

Everything in the Essential walk, then we keep going.

We follow the same route through the centre, the river and the Backs. After Senate House Passage, instead of looping back to King’s, we turn left into Trinity Street and head up towards Trinity College and St John’s, the two giants of the colleges. From there to the Round Church, one of only a handful of medieval round churches left in England, then back down past Sidney Sussex to the Market Square in the middle of the city.

We finish, as on the Essential walk, at the Eagle, with food or a beer waiting at the Pint Shop.

This is the walk for visitors who want the bigger colleges and a bit more time, not a rushed lap.

A note on college access

Cambridge’s colleges are private. This tour follows public streets, paths and riverside routes throughout. We view the college buildings from public vantage points, so there are no entry fees and no access limitations. The best views of Cambridge are from the streets anyway.

A note on flexibility

This is a live, private walk. The exact route, the stories and the stops can shift with the season, the weather and whatever is happening in the city that day. A guide who reads the city as it actually is will always give you a better walk than one reading a fixed script. If a particular stop is closed or busy, I will always find you the equivalent.

Perfect for

  • Couples and families on a day trip from London

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Essential and Full walks?
Route

The Essential is a 90-minute loop of the city centre, the river and the Backs. The Full walk does all of that, then carries on up Trinity Street to Trinity College, St John’s and the Round Church, and back through the Market Square. The Full takes about 2.5 hours.

Where does the tour start?
Duration

We meet at King’s, in central Cambridge. I confirm the exact meeting point when you book, and I can meet you at your hotel or coach drop-off if that is easier.

Is the tour available in French?
Pricing

Yes. I am a native French speaker and the whole walk runs in French at the same price. Visite guidée en français.

Do we go inside the colleges?
Suitability

No. The walk follows public streets and riverside paths, and we view the colleges from public ground. No entry fees, no restrictions.

Is there food at the end?
Logistics

If you would like to finish with food or a drink, we end near the Eagle and the Pint Shop. That part is optional and not included in the price.

How much walking is it?
Languages

The Essential is flat and gentle, roughly 1.5 to 2 km, paced by your group. The Full walk is longer but still flat and unhurried.
