About This Tour

The Best of Cambridge Photo Tour is the natural starting point for anyone who wants to leave Cambridge with genuinely great images rather than the same photographs everyone else takes from the same spot on King’s Parade.

This is a standalone tour with its own distinct route — chosen purely for photographic merit. Every stop has been selected over 27 years of professional photography in Cambridge for the quality of image it produces: the angle, the light at different times of day, the compositional relationship between the buildings and the space around them.

Your guide will show you where to stand, what to look for, and how to get the most from whatever camera or smartphone you have with you. The result is a set of images that look nothing like the standard Cambridge postcard — and everything like the city actually is when someone who knows it takes you to the right place at the right moment.

The Route — Selected Stops

📌  This tour has its own distinct route, optimised for photography. It is not the same as the Cambridge Highlights guided walking tour, though some locations overlap. The route may vary based on light conditions, season, and the time of your session.

  • King’s Parade — the composition most visitors get wrong, and how to get it right
  • Senate House Passage — compressed perspective, stone texture, the narrow lane that opens to the sky
  • Clare Bridge and the Backs — the classic river view, with the exact vantage point that makes it work
  • Trinity Lane — 500 years of unchanged stonework, the light that hits it in the afternoon
  • The Mathematical Bridge at Queens’ — geometry, reflection, and the angle nobody uses
  • Garret Hostel Bridge — the photographer’s bridge, with the full Backs panorama behind
  • Market Square — pattern, colour, people, compression with a short telephoto
  • Hidden courtyards selected on the day for their light

What Your Guide Teaches Along the Way

  • Where to position yourself for the strongest composition at each location
  • How to read and use natural light — direction, quality, colour temperature
  • Foreground, middle ground, and background — making Cambridge’s depth work for you
  • Camera and smartphone settings adapted to your specific device
  • How to make a familiar landmark look unfamiliar and worth a second look

Perfect For

  • First-time visitors who want great images and the stories behind the locations
  • Amateur photographers at any level who want to improve while exploring Cambridge
  • Couples, friends, or solo travellers visiting for a day from London
  • Anyone who has been to Cambridge before and wants to see it differently

College Access — Important

⚠️   All photography tours follow public streets, riverside paths, and open spaces. No college entry is required or included on any tour. College exteriors, gates, and riverside views are photographed from public vantage points throughout. There are no entry fees, no photography restrictions from the college, and no access limitations on any of our tours.

Tour Flexibility

💡  Our photography tours are live private experiences. Routes, lighting conditions, and stops may vary depending on the season, weather, local events, and what Cambridge looks like on the day. Photography is inherently responsive to conditions — a guide who adapts to the light and the city as it actually is will always produce better results than one following a fixed script. The route for this tour is optimised for light conditions on the day — morning sessions follow a different sequence from afternoon sessions to make the most of the available light.
